In the 1986 World Cup, was Argentina a good team or did Maradona literally lead them to the title?
The story of Diego Armando Maradona single handedly winning the 1986 FIFA world cup in Mexico
is a myth created to challenge Pele's own legendary status and out the Argentine above the Brazilian.
No disrespect to Maradona's individual brilliance against Belgium and notable against england where be scored the best goal in football history.
But the 11 players were so good.
Football is a team sport and 11 players all contribute to win the tournament, though we may say one man may stand above others, or motivate them to victory.
Goal keeper Nery Pumpido was in his best,
winning copa libertadores with river plate.
Defense had Oscar Ruggiero, Cuciuffo, Jose Louis Brown(the sweeper) and Daniel pasarella(who captained the 1978 squad but was stripped of the armband and given to a new talent Maradona by the new coach).
The defense wa rock solid and only conceded 5 goals in the tournament; two of which came from set pieces in the final match against Germany in the final.
The Midfielders deserve more credit because of their ability to break opponents play and at the same time initiate attack. The trio of Ricardo Gusti,Sergio Batista and hector Enrique was so solid.
The attack led by Maradona
have two players who could also win games for Argentina without Diego Armando; the two Jorges; Burruchagga and Valdano.
Conclusion:
No doubt, Maradona was good
but he had a compacted and complete team to help him lift the FIFA world cup trophy.

Yes and yes.
Argentina was a great team and yes, Maradona helped a lot.
Argentina has always been a top team, it is now a top team and chances are will always remain a top team. In 1994 Argentina did not have the best Worldcup but quickly they bounced back to find themselves as usual in the top FIFA rankings. Argentinians love soccer to much and will not allow their team to be weak for long.
The 1986 team was very strong as all Argentinian teams are. It is true that Maradona was at his prime and as the captain, he led his team to winning the cup. Maradona also won the prize for best player of the tournament (even though he cheated by scoring a goal with his hand and managed to deceive the referees!).
This being said, no one should ever hint that the 1986 team was weak in anyway. With or without Maradona, the team could have taken anyone. At the end they beat none other than all might Germany, a battle that would continue the next tournament when Germany beat the Argentinians. That day as I recall was grand!!
At the end of the story the situation is very similar than it is today with FC. Barcelona & Messi. Take Messi out of the team and Barça remains a powerhouse worth of any title. Put Messi in and they are even stronger. Same with Maradona and Argentina in 86'

It wasn’t a good team.
It was a great team.
Maradona took over in the second phase, and was instrumental in winning the WC, without a question. But the team had a rock solid defense, a lethal scorer in Valdano, another playmaker in Burruchaga, and after all, Maradona’s participation in the final game vs. Germany was limited, as the Germans had a two, sometimes three player lock on him: Argentina scored on a cross from Burruchaga to Brown’s head, then on an assist from Enrique to Valdano, and only in the third goal did Maradona assist Burruchaga.

Argentina 1986 was a great team, Maradona was its leader.
If we replace Maradona by Di Stefano or Messi, Argentina also won the World Cup 1986
If the national team was Bolivia, neither Maradona, Di Stefano, nor Messi won the World Cup
