Richard Rosenthal, 50, of Fair Lawn, N.J., was a devoted family man who volunteered his time to fight a rare disease afflicting his eldest son.
He served as treasurer of the Dysautonomia Foundation, named for the nervous-system disorder that confines his 18-year-old son, Evan, to a wheelchair.
Yet Rosenthal never complained. Not about his son's ailment. And not when he found himself out of work for six months, before getting a job in March at investment firm Cantor Fitzgerald.
He was happy in his new position as vice president of finance, but six months after starting he was caught in his office on the 101st floor of the World Trade Center when a hijacked jetliner crashed into the building on Sept. 11.
Rosenthal grew up in Clifton, N.J., where he met his wife, Loren. They started dating when they were teenagers.
After graduating from Clifton High School, Rosenthal earned a bachelor's degree from Boston University and an MBA from Rutgers University.
Rosenthal loved gardening and watching football, and served as treasurer of the Jewish Center in Fair Lawn.
But, most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His wife had thrown him a 50th birthday party four months before his death.
In addition to his wife and eldest son, Rosenthal is survived by a son, Seth, 15; his parents, Leonard and Florence; and a sister, Audrey Model.
