Athens, 4 August 2010 - Russia is mulling the possibility of opening its naval base in Greece or Turkey, reads Greek daily "Kathimerini", citing commander of the Russian Navy, Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky. According to Vysotsky, Russia would like to expand its naval bases abroad, and when it comes to the area of the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean, Greece or Turkey are the most adequate locations.
"The possibility of opening a base abroad is good, but its needs to be realized in stages, after assessing potentials of a certain country. The first step in this direction could be made through routine visits to military ships", he added. The announcement follows reports in "Washington Post" that the United States are preparing to deploy radar systems in Turkey or Bulgaria as part of the missile shield in southern Europe.
