Οι Zep γεννήθηκαν μέσα από τη Βρετανική blues σκηνή και ενέπνευσαν τις επόμενες γενιές των συγκροτημάτων του heavy metal, αλλά και του progressive rock. Σχηματίστηκαν το 1968 από τον Page, ο οποίος έπαιζε προηγουμένως στους Yardbirds και προόριζε τους Zeppelin για διάδοχό τους σχήμα (το αρχικό τους όνομα ήταν New Yardbirds). Αν θέλουμε λοιπόν να δούμε τα πράγματα με τη σειρά, θα πρέπει να πάμε πίσω στο 1963 όταν ιδρύθηκαν οι Yardbirds και στις διεργασίες που έγιναν σ’ αυτούς μέχρι το 1966. Με λίγα λόγια, όταν δηλαδή οι Keith Relf (φωνή), Paul Samwell-Smith (μπάσο), Chris Dreja (κιθάρα), Jim McCarty (τύμπανα), και Anthony Topham (κιθάρα) ίδρυσαν τους πρώιμους Yardbirds. Αργότερα χρειάστηκε να φύγει ο Topham, να αντικατασταθεί από τον Eric Clapton, ο οποίος εν συνεχεία να αντικατασταθεί από τον Jeff Beck. Το 1966 χρειάστηκε να αποχωρήσει ο Smith που έπαιζε μπάσο, για να αντικατασταθεί από τον μπασίστα …..Jimmy Page! Εδώ είμαστε λοιπόν. Ο Page (εξαιρετικός κιθαρίστας και περιζήτητος session man της εποχής) συνέβαλε πάρα πολύ στην εικόνα, στον προσανατολισμό και στην ηχητική ταυτότητα των Yardbirds. Όταν ο Beck αποχώρησε, ο Page προσπάθησε να φτιάξει ένα νέο σχήμα που θα το ονόμαζε New Yardbirds, από το οποίο τελικά προέκυψαν οι Led Zeppelin. Για να κλείσω με το κεφάλαιο Yardbirds, θα μπορούσα να τους ονομάσω Φυτώριο αφού απ’ αυτούς προέκυψαν σημαντικές και σπουδαίες μπάντες για τη Βρετανική μουσική σκηνή. Με μια γρήγορη ματιά θα δούμε ότι με τα ατέλειωτα “φύγε εσύ, έλα εσύ”, σχηματίζονται από το Yardbirds φυτώριο οι Derek & the Dominos και η εν συνεχεία σπουδαία σόλο καριέρα του Clapton, οι Jeff Beck Group (Jeff Beck), οι Renaissance (Relf & McCarty) και βέβαια οι Led Zeppelin από τον Page. Ο Dreja ασχολήθηκε και έκανε επιτυχημένη καριέρα στη φωτογραφία. Οι Zep έστησαν τη δική τους εταιρεία, την Swan Song, (1974-75) υπογράφοντας συμβόλαια με τους Bad Company και τους Pretty Things. Το 1979 κατά τη διάρκεια των ηχογραφήσεων του "In Through The Out Door", ο Plant αποσύρθηκε λόγω του θανάτου του γιου του. Tο 1980 ο Bonham βρέθηκε νεκρός δηλητηριασμένος από αλκοόλ και τα υπόλοιπα μέλη αποφάσισαν να διαλύσουν το γκρουπ. O Jones εγκατέλειψε τις live εμφανίσεις και επικέντρωσε το ενδιαφέρον του σε παραγωγές και ενορχηστρώσεις, με πιο επιτυχημένη προσπάθεια το "Automatic For The People" των R.E.M. Oι Plant & Page ακολούθησαν σόλο καριέρες, αλλά συνεργάστηκαν και μεταξύ τους.
